Mr. Ed: I'm 70 years old and have lived in the Akron-Tallmadge, Ohio area all of my life. For 10-years (1957-1967) I lived most summers at our home in Cook Forest, Pa. I'm a U.S. Army veteran (1971-1973). I collect many things such as: antique cars, antique firearms, movies, movie props, old newspapers and posters, Wyatt Earp items, Civil War items, John Wayne items, items from the old west including Native American items, just about anything historical. I've been married for 47-years. My wife and I have a son and a daughter and three granddaughters and two great grandchildren.

Typewriters ~

My typewriters include a 1937 Royal office typewriter, a 1974 Sharp electric personal typewriter and my old 1992 HP laptop computer.

Early HP & 3M Laptop Computers. I bought this back in 1992 and used it for years.

1860s Civil War Era Field Desk ~

Once used by an officer for the Northern Army, I bought this old field desk back in the 1980s at an auction that was selling guns from a closed gun shop. There was other antique items as well. The guns went for big money but everything else was pretty cheap. There was one other bidder and I fought him off with my bid of $35.00. I learned two things that day. 1> people go to auctions for the star items and do not stick around for the other stuff. 2> people will pay almost anything to get a item if they want it bad enough. I don't think that these folks really knew what this desk was. Good for me!

The Gallery ~

The following sets of photos show my basement display of historical artifacts dating from the early 1800s up to the 1990s. I call this my Gallery.

Video cameras. Two old VHS video cameras. One in it's original case with all accessories and the other on a tripod. Plus an old studio portrait camera on another tripod.

Duke's chair.

1939 photo of John Wayne on the set of the feature film, "Stagecoach".

Standing up is a chopper gurney from the Vietnam war that was used to evacuate wounded and dead soldiers from the battle lines.

Old 8mm home movie projection equipment from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Old cameras dating from 1911 to 1946.

Slide projector and equipment from the 1940s.

Bottom can is an old Flaherty's potato chip tin. The center can is from Charles Chips and the top is a store counter display container for Bachman's pretzel rods. These all date to the 1950s.

This bell was cast from the original mold that was used for the bells on the Titanic that porters rang on the decks to announce dinner. It's inscribed: "TITANIC, LONDON, 1912".

20-Mule Team Borax Sculpture ~

I bought this on a trip to Cook Forest, Pa. a few years ago. It cost me $12.50 at a shop that had some things that were a little differant.

Robbie the Robot ~

I built this kit back in 2007. It was leftover stock from the hobby shop that I closed in 1999.

R2D2 Robot ~

Stars Wars robot that I bought from eBay years ago. Battery operated, it runs around in all directions and makes the same noise as the original.

Electric Chair ~

This is one of the items that I made several years ago. It's completely made of wood.

The Rack ~

Remember the medevil racks? I made this one out of wood several years ago.

Karosene to Electric Lamp ~

I like this old lamp because it is an original coal-oil lamp that was converted to electric.

-

It still has it's original coal-oil wick turning knob that actually turns the lamp on-off. The original burner is still there and the lightbulb socket is mounted to it. If someone wanted to remove the socket and add a wick, this could simply be converted back to karosene.

Old Flintlock Rifle ~

This old flintlock rifle hangs on a beam in the basement.It's the first blackpowder rifle I bought and is the one that got me interested in black powder shooting. The flintlock pistols hanging from the rafter are props.

Beer Signage ~

I also collect beer signs and lights. I have around 20 of them.

This Coors Light sign has a moving lighted banner at the bottom.

I have two of these and they are pretty cool. The world globe slowly turns.

Another tin sign. This one is pretty big.

I like this bottle sign. You could cut a slit in the cap and it would make a cool bank.

Another wall hanging tin sign. I wanted to do something with this one.

So I'm using it on the top of my 1800s Ice Cream table. It's pretty neat. It gives a 3-D effect but it's totally flat..

Beer Openers ~

I also collect antique beer and soda pop bottle and can openers from the Akron, Ohio area.

Antique Toy Beer Wagon ~

Dating to 1890, this cast steel beer wagon was a kid's toy. However, it's in it's original condition and has never been restored. Plus it has all of it's barrels. I would suspect that it was never played with.

The place where I bought it had it in their showcase for over five years with a pricetag of $75.00. I refused to pay that much so I kept passing it by. One day, I noticed it had been reduced to $35.00 so I bought it.

-

At this time it resides in my scale model western town called Cactus Creek which is set up on tables in my basement.

Harley Davidson Telephone ~

I bought this thing back in the early 1980s to use on the desk in my den.

-

It worked really well for a lot of years untill recently when my wife and I got our cellphones. I had the house phone turned off because we no longer wanted it.

-

This phone still works great. I took the "plug-in" cord off because I didn't need it any longer.

-

You could have a regular ringer or turn a switch to make it roar when the phone rang. Also the head and tail lights would flash when it rang.

-

The dialing buttons is located under the seat.

-

The seat and gas tank is the reciever.

-

Now-A-Days it's just a glorified motorcycle statue on a shelf in the basement.

Old Fishing Scale ~

Old scale dates to the 1940s. It still works perfectly.

Antique Rug Beater ~

Dates to around 1905.

Ohio License Plates ~

The end wall in the basement is my license plate wall. When we took this house, there was a large box in the fruit cellar full of license plates from 1949 to present. I sold many of them on eBay but kept these for myself.

Have Gun, Will Travel ~

Back in 1958, two western heroes visited my school, Harris Grade School in Akron, Ohio. One was the Lone Ranger and the other was Paladin from the TV show, Have Gun, Will Travel. Clayton Moore, (The Lone Ranger) gave each of us kids a fake silver bullet. Mine is packed away and when I find it I'll post a picture. But the other was actor Richard Boone who played Paladin in Have Gun, Will Travel. In the show Paladin would give his business card to people plus it was on the show's opening and end credits. While at our school, Richard Boone gave each of us kids one of his cards. After the show was over, I wondered back stage just in time to see a man, I figured it was Boone's agent, toss a stack of the cards in the trash can. When they left I got them all out. I still have them all. The one in the frame with the picture of Richard Boone was the card that he handed me. I always kept them seperate.

Trap ~

Antique trap for small critters.

Remember Bob's Big Boy Restaurants? ~

A couple of weeks before the Bob's Big Boy closed down in Tallmadge, Ohio, I bought this bank. I really didn't want to pay $12.95 for it, but figured it would go good with my model car collection. Then the restaurant closed. So now I'm glad I got it.

Titanic ~

A couple of the Titanic novelties that I bought from eBay years ago. A sinking Titanic bank and a set of Titanic salt and pepper shakers. Kind of differant!

Karosene Ship's Lamp ~

I absolutely love this little lamp. It came from a ship and dates to around 1900. It still burns karosene.

Karosene Safety Lamp ~

This lamp dates to circa 1885. It was safer because of the browd and flat bottomed body. It was less likely to fall or get knocked over. These were used a lot in gold, silver and coal mines.

Glenn Miller Band ~

Back during World War II, famous bandleader, Glenn Miller and his band inlisted in the Army and entertained troops all over the world. This is a room roaster for the hotel they stayed at for one of their concerts. It's dated 1944 and even has notes all over it written by Glenn Miller with a pencil.

Scale Model Guillotine ~

This was an Aurora model kit that I built back in the middle 1960s. It still works pretty good. Would make a great mouse trap.

Anybody willing to stick their pinky in there? Don't worry, there's a wicker basket to catch it before it hits the ground.

Bachman Pretzel Counter Container ~

Remember back when you could buy pretzel rods for a penny at the drug store or candy shop? I loved seeing these containers sitting on the store counters. This one dates to around 1953.

Containers for snacks, etc. ~

Remermber Charles' Chips? Flaherty Potato Chips? Nabisco Crackers? Charles' Chip trucks delivered snacks like potato chips, corn chips and chesse doodles right to your door. I remember we had a Charles' Chip guy. Flaherty was another chip company around Akron. And Nabisco used to come in a metal container instead of today's cardboard ones. No wonder why they used to stay fresh for months. Now-a-days you have to use them in a couple of days...at least it seems that way.

These's also an old Quaker Oats tin and a coffee can from circa 1915.

Lincoln Logs ~

What boy didn't love these sets? These date to the 1960s.

Pocket TV Set ~

I bought this little Casio pocket color TV back around 1990. This was a really cool set. When I worked security, I was on third shift from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. This little set really came in handy. It got really good reception on multiple channels and the color was perfect. And to this day it still works. And yes, it really fits snuggly in a shirt pocket.

Shaving Items ~

Shaving gear from the 1940s and 1950s. The brush in the middle was used by Barber Bob Stiles in his shop in Akron, Ohio in 1950s & '60s to brush cut hear off of your neck. Bob was my barber back then. I don't know just how I ended up with the brush but I remember it very well.

Ford Tools ~

In the 19teens and 1920s, when you bought a new Ford motor car, you got a tool kit with it. (And believe me, with Ford's you needed it!) Anyway, these tools and jack was in the kit. They are dated 1916 which puts them in the Model "T" Ford era. The board I made.

HO Model Trains ~

I'm also a collector of HO model trains. I have hundreds of them packed away. These are on a shelf in the basement.

G-Gauge Model Trains ~

I got these trains back in the later 1960s from Akron train collector, Mack Lowrey. The log car was made for me by a good friend.

Passenger/Mail Car. Has all the passenger seats plus a pot-bellied stove.

This log car was made and given to me as a gift by my good friend, Ron. Sadly Ron died a few years ago.

Caboose.

Barler's Ideal Oil Heater No. 6 ~

My sister gave me this old karosine heater a few years back and I just recently restored it. It sits now by our basement door.

When I got it, it was a mass of rust. My sister used it for a yard decoration for many years so it was outside through all four seasons for a long time.

-

The Barler's heaters date to 1890 - 1900. I would never try lighting it today, but it's a cool novelty for the basement.

Ohio Railroad Caboose Stove ~

This stove dates back to circa 1885. It was once the main heat sorce for a caboose on the Ohio Railroad. Back in the 1970s, A friend gave me this while cleaning out his garage. His father, then deceased, had brought it home from his job. He had worked for a company that was scrapping out all cabooses since the railroad was not going to use them anymore. This stove, believe it or not, was still in use in a caboose. For about five years, my wife and I actually used it in a rec room. Finally I retired it and now it simply sits on the landing in our basement.

1942 Army/Navy E Flag From Firestone Rubber Co. ~

This flag was presented to Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio on August 31, 1942 in honor of the work that they were doing for the war effort.

The caption on this picture reads: "Undersecretary Of War Robert P. Patterson presents the Army-Navy Production Award on August 31, 1942, to The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, the first company in the rubber industry to receive this honor. The pennant is displayed by Harvey S. Firestone Jr. (left) and C.F. Richmond, president of Local 7, United Rubber Workers, CIO (right). More than 25,000 war workers and their families, Army and Navy officers, and guests of honor attended the ceremonies at the Firestone Stadium." This photo and caption came from the book, "The Firestone Story", (McGraw-Hill, 1951).

The story that my mother told me back in the 1960s was this: My father worked for Firestone for over 34-years. He was there the night this photo was taken. The flag was flown on the roof of the Firestone offices for awhile, I don't know how long. Sometime around 1955 or '56, my dad was going through some stuff in the basement store rooms at the factory and found this flag wadded up in a ball tossed on top of some chemical drums. He took it and headed for the office of Harvey Firestone Jr. He asked Firestone what he wanted to do with the flag. "Throw it out!" Harvey told him. So dad took it and tossed in into the trunk of his car. That's how we ended up with it. My dad was a collector too.

I've flown this flag outside on several July 4th celebrations in honor of my dad and the work he did for the war effort during World War II.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Flag ~

I'm sorry about the picture, but if you look close, you can see a flag on my basement wall behind the rocker, tree and TV. I will be moving some of this stuff in the near future and will get a better picture of the flag then.

This is a picture of the Goodyear flag flying during World War II over Goodyear's Blimp hanger. A good friend of my dad's, who worked for Goodyear, gave me this flag many, many years ago.

Old Wanted Posters ~

Old wanted posters just aren't around much anymore. They were mostly hung outdoors back then and the weather tore them up. But once in awhile you come across one that was probably used indoors and then slipped into a drawer or some kid took it and put it away. Here's one for Billy the Kid that has to date before 1881.

Most of us who know a little about the old west remember Belle Starr, the bandit queen. Sam was one of her several common-law husbands.

Oliver Perry poster issued by the Pinkerton Detectives circa 1901. I worked for the Pinkerton agency for many years...but not when they were looking for Perry.

Old Bike ~

This old bike is circa 1946. It belonged to my mother-in-law originally. It has the basket on the front and the rear view mirror. But at the time when I took this picture, I needed a place to dry my car mats.

Stand-Ups ~

The Princess Leah stand-up I bought off of eBay years ago. The Lost In Space Robot was given to me by Bob May. He played the robot in the 1960s TV show.

Bogey stops by once in awhile but he's always in black & white. Weird!

Rock Band Posters ~

If you were old enough in the 1950s and '60s, you should remember seeing these posters tacked to building fronts and mostly telephone poles. Here is four un-used posters of the Beatles, Elvis Presley and two of the Rolling Stones.

Titanic Bell ~

Second Class passengers on board the "unsinkable" Titanic were called to dinner by the ringing of a bell. Here is one of them. This cthing is LOUD! It has a maple handle and brass bell with the inscription: TITANIC 1912.

VCR ~

This is my very first video tape recorder. I bought it back in 1982. It's a top-load Philco with "wired" remote and cost me at that time a cool $1,109.95. Many VCRs came after this one, But I kept it all these years because...IT STILL WORKS!

Autographs ~

I have hundreds of signed photos. This is a few of them, Tim Allen, Heather Kozar and Bob Newhart.

Medevil Battle Shield ~

Many of the Knights and others fighting wars during the middle ages in Europe thought they had a better chance at survival if they put some holy artwork on their shields. I don't know if it worked.

This guy went all out. Including the center showing Adam & Eve then at the bottom, (out of picture), his enemies falling into Hell.

John Wayne ~

Young Duke, Dressed in his cavalry uniform from his earlier pictures complete with pistol and holster. The cylinder in the pistol actually turns.

Old Duke. Taken from his later movies, this doll has a real leather vest and he's carrying the rifle with t he ring on it. He's dressed in his cowboy outfit.

Patriot's Bench ~

I fell in love with this bench when I first saw it. I had to have it! The tag said $119.99. That was too much for me to pay so I said, "Oh well", and walked away. Later I asked one of the salesmen about it and he said, "Oh wow! I thought I re-tagged it. I must have forgot. It's on sale today for $49.95." Well, as you can see, it's in my yard. I really should have bought two of them.

Fan ~

I really love this old fan. It reminds me of the ones that hung in hunting and fishing lodges back in the 1920s and '30s. This one is cool because it has six speeds.

Cameras ~

Some of my antique cameras. The one at the arrow belonged to my mother.

Babe Ruth ~

Back in 1936, Babe Ruth signed this photo to my grandfather.

Lawson's Milk Company ~

If your from the Akron, Ohio area and are over 50, you may remember Lawson's Milk Stores. Here's some of their milk jugs, a Lawson's dip container and the Lawson's logo from when they changed over to plastic jugs. The bottle opener is from the 1940s Cedar Point Park. The small milk bottle with red lettering is from the old Liberty Dairy in Akron.

The box in the back is an unopened puzzle of the Tallmadge Circle Church.

I also like bears.

American Eagles ~

I love eagles. This one is hand carved from wood.

The owl is also carved from wood.

I really like the eagle on the Liberty Bell.

Duck Decoys ~

I also collect duck decoys.

Kennedy Keepsake ~

I bought this figurine from an auction of Jackie Kennedy's personal items many years ago. It is a figure of John Jr. saluting his father's casket at President Kennedy's Funeral in 1963.

Vintage American Flag ~

This flag was shipped from the Veteran's Aministration Offices in Washington, DC to The Veteran's Amisitration in Hine, Illinous in January, 1958. For some reason, the box was never opened. I got it from an estate, still sealed. I opened it and found the original packing slip inside. I opened the box in 2013. It had been sealed for 55-years. I have never removed the flag from the box.

Old West ~

The stagecoach model I built back around 1968. The longhorns my brother-in-law made for me years ago. He works with leather.

Cowboys around the campfire. I love this old figure.

Young Billy Clanton ready to draw at the OK Corral.

This was a gift from my brother-in-law many years ago. When my oldest granddaughter was very small, she broke off the gun barrel. I plan to fix it "one of these days."

This cow skull came from a nighbor back in the late 1980s when he was cleaning out his garage.

On the top of the cabinet in the corner is an actual tumbleweed that I friend brought back from their vacation in Mexico years ago. My friends are cool. They bring me the weird stuff that you can't get in gift shops.

1920s triple frame with three of my favorite westerners: Left to Right - Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hicock and Sitting Bull.

Kennedy / Johnson for 1960 ~

At the end of the cabinet is a 1960 Kennedy-Johnson car antenna banner that has never been used.

Medicines and Medical ~

All of these medicine bottles still have their original contents.

All bottles are from the 1870s and 1880s. Some have liquid and others have pills.

There's a syringe used by undertakers.

-

There is also an old 19th century embalming syringe.

Coins, Paper & Watches ~

The coins here all date to circa the Revolutionary War. The paper money is all original pieces and consist of a 10c note from 1863, 50c note from 1862 and a $5 note from 1874. There's also a John Deere watch, two Chevy watches, one for cars and another for trucks and an antique watch from the 1890s, all in working order.

Crosley Radio ~

This was a Christmas gift a couple of years ago from my wife. I use it a lot in my den. It has the radio, turn table, cassette player and a CD player.

Cat's Ass ~

This is the extent of my stuffed animals. When I worked on the loading dock back in the early 1980s, a trucker gave me this. He had it in the outside storage door on his cab. It has seen every state except Washington State, Iowa and Colarado. Needless to say, my wife had to toss it into the washing machine when I brought it home.
